Meet Our Summer Missionaries 2010

We are blessed to have three full time summer missionaries to serve with us this summer!

Kinsey Galyon is a Senior at Reinhardt University in Georgia and a member of the Women’s Basketball Team.  She is a member of Sevier Heights Baptist Church in Knoxville, Tennessee.   This is Kinsey’s third year in Calgary with Southwinds Church.  Kinsey is majoring in Sports Medicine.

Adam Velez is a Senior at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs where he is Men’s Discipleship Coordinator.  He is also a member of Mountain View Baptist Church of Hickory, NC.   This is Adam’s third year serving alongside Southwinds Church.  Adam is a gifted musician and soccer player.

Denise Shirley is a Freshman at North Greenville University in South Carolina where she is a member of the Ladies Golf Team.  She is a member of Mountain Creek Baptist Church of Greenville, SC.   Denise has been a part of the summer team for four years, and this is her first full summer with us.

Please pray for these young adults who are giving up their entire summer to serve Christ.  Pray for each of these as they are seeking God’s will for their futures and how they will continue to answer God’s call on their lives.

Upward Ball Hockey Camp 2010

During the week of April 19 – 23, Southwinds Church sponsored its second annual Upward Ball Hockey Camp. Last year’s camp was the first ever Upward Ball Hockey Camp in the Province of Alberta. 30 boys & girls came out to Lake Chaparral’s upper rink (without the ice) to run around, learn hockey skills and rules, and hear and lessons from the Bible. Over 20 volunteers from Southwinds Church, Trinity Baptist Church, and even friends from outside the church came to help. God blessed us with great weather and no injuries.

On Friday night, we held a family BBQ event serving hot dogs, chips, pop and a giant Dairy Queen ice cream cake, which was donated by a parent. Afterwards, the kids were back out on the rink for their last games. The kids received their own pro-style hockey stick decorated with their Upward award star stickers, hockey ball, Upward water bottle, and Upward Ball Hockey Camp tee shirt. Most importantly, these children now know that Jesus loves them.

Thank you for your prayers for the children, the volunteers, and the weather.

Saddle Ridge Ranch – VBS Clinic

On Saturday , March 27th, our sister church, Trinity Baptist Church held a Saddle Ridge Ranch VBS training seminar for Calgary. Andrea was the leader for the “missions” segment and Tim roped them in for some recreation activities. You can watch videos and see more pictures on their Facebook pages. It was a great day as nearly 30 were in attendance. Southwinds Church will have VBS each Sunday over a 10-week period and also implement the theme into summer camps and block parties. Kids can ask questions and discover the answers found in God’s word.

2010! Did you make a New Year’s Resolution?

On the first Sunday of 2010, Tim preached our message at Southwinds Church, while Bo was away in Texas visiting family.  Tim asked the question listed in the above title.   Tim has 6 suggested goals for the new year with scriptural backgrounds.

·         Attend a Life Group: Nehemiah 8:1-3, 5-8. Additional teaching took place during and after the scriptures were read so that others may better understand.

·         Tithe: Deuteronomy 14:22, set aside 10%. Deuteronomy 26:11-13, what can your 10% do or who can it help? Malachi 3:8-10, don’t rob from God and see how He can bless you on earth and in heaven.

·         Pray Daily: Luke 11:1-4. Jesus teaches us how to pray. Tim suggested we follow this guide as well;

P- Praise God first in your prayers

R-Requests of others should come second in your prayers

A-All other requests or issues / needs come third in your prayers

Y-Yourself, pray for yourself last

·         Bible Read Daily: 2 Timothy 3:16-17, the Bible is God breathed. Romans 15:4, the Bible was written to teach us and encourage us in all our works.

·         Worship Attendance: Ephesians 2:19-22, church is the people not the building. 1 Timothy 3:15, God’s household is the pillar and foundation of the Truth. We must be a part of the church to continue to build God’s household.

·         Know Christ: What type of relationship do you have with Jesus? Romans 10:9-13 instructs us how we can accept Christ.

Senior Mission Trip & Fall Festival Snowout

A senior adult mission team from First Baptist Church Kings Mountain, NC came up to help with our Fall Festival events in Silverado and Chaparral. A 7 member team, ages ranging from 70 to 77,  arrived September 30th feeling sunshine and warmth on their faces.  But by Saturday, the cold winds had arrived bringing snow showers and overcast skies. The team braved the cold and two hour set up in Silverado. But the cold dreary weather kept even the bravest Calgarians from coming out. Nonetheless, the Southwinds volunteers along with the visiting seniors had a great time and kept warm with lots of hot chocolate during the festival.  Sunday’s Fall Festival in Chaparral was a total snowout.  But that did not stop this senior group from baking brownies and cookies for some of their new Canadian friends. They delivered the baked goods along with a   handmade “Thank You” card after a great Sunday worship service at Southwinds Church.  God serves through all His people.

Thank you Morris, Marjorie, Dean, Dot, Joanne, June and Mary.

Baptism is a Time for Celebration

Sunday, June 14th, was a special day at Southwinds Church.

About 100 people joined in celebration at the baptism of Alysia after the church service held at Auburn Bay.  Although Auburn Bay Lake was a bit chilly on that day, everyone was joyous over this wonderful occasion.
